- Review Refrigerant Levels: Connect a manifold gauge set to measure system pressures. Low refrigerant levels will show low suction and high discharge pressures, indicating a potential leak and necessitating a recharge.
- Inspect Electrical Connections: Ensure all connections, especially those at the compressor and overload relay, are clean, tight, and free from corrosion. Use a wire brush or electrical cleaner to remove any oxidation.
- Verify Control Board Signals: Measure the control signal voltage at the compressor's terminals while the unit is running. The expected voltage should be between 24-30V DC. If absent, trace the signal back to the control board for potential faults.
- Assess Start Capacitor: With the power off, test the start capacitor using a capacitance meter. A capacitor should maintain a rating within +/- 10% of its specified value. A failing capacitor can cause compressor overload during startup.
