Carrier HVAC Errors

Technical Specification Overview

The Carrier Infinity system is designed to operate within specific parameters: the typical control voltage is maintained between 24VDC and 30VDC, and the refrigerant pressure should remain within the ranges specified in the refrigerant charge documentation—generally around 65-75 psi for low side and 250-300 psi for high side in standard applications. Communication between components follows the proprietary ComfortLink communication protocol, ensuring that data transfer remains reliable across the system.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Verify the error code: Access the thermostat display and confirm that fault code 178 is the active issue. This pertains to high resistance in the communication line between outdoor and indoor units.
  • Inspect communication wiring: Examine the wiring harness for signs of wear, abrasion, or environmental damage. Look for frayed wires or loose connections that may interrupt signal integrity.
  • Measure DC voltage: Use a digital multimeter to measure DC voltage across the communication terminals at both the indoor and outdoor units. Verify that the voltage is within the normal operating range of 24VDC to 30VDC; readings significantly lower may indicate a broken wire or poor connection.
  • Check continuity: With the power turned off, use the multimeter to test the continuity of the communication wires. Place one lead on each end of the wire; a reading of infinite resistance indicates an open circuit.
  • Inspect outdoor unit power supply: Confirm that the outdoor unit is receiving adequate power. Test voltage at the disconnect switch leading to the outdoor unit; ensure it is above 200VAC. A low voltage reading may indicate a power supply issue.
  • Reset system components: Turn off power to the entire system for at least 5 minutes to reset all components. After restoring power, ensure that the fault code has cleared. If the code reappears, proceed with further diagnostics.
  • Update firmware: If applicable, ensure that the thermostat and system components are running the latest firmware version. Check manufacturer’s website for updates and instructions on installation.
  • Consult the installation manual: If the problem persists, refer to the installation manual for the Infinity system to verify proper installation and setup, including wiring diagrams and system configuration parameters.
